     Howard L Wilburn was born on September 25, 1945, in Daniels, West Virginia, and became a Christian at age nine.  Educated in the public schools of Raleigh County, he graduated from Shady Spring High School in May 1963 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his USAF service he received the Air Force Commendation Medal for service in Vietnam.  Subsequent to military service, he entered Piedmont Bible College and graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree, cum laude.

     Pastor Wilburn had the privilege of serving in four different ministries from 1970 to 1988.  He was the Pastor of Daniels Missionary Baptist Church, Daniels, West Virginia; the first Alumni Coordinator of Piedmont Bible College; the Senior Pastor of Foot of Ten Bible Church, Duncansville, Pennsylvania; and the pastor of Swan Creek Baptist Church, Jonesville, North Carolina.  

     Upon the retirement of the PBC President, Dr. Donald Drake, Pastor Wilburn was elected by the Board of Trustees to become the College’s fourth president.  He assumed that role on October 1, 1988 and served for 14 years.  Subsequent to the PBC presidency, he became the Senior Pastor of Salem Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His retirement from the active pastorate was on June 30, 2016.   

     Dr. Wilburn received a Master of Education Degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, May 1982.  He also earned the Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership from UNCG, August 1995.

     On June 2, 1972, Dr. Wilburn married the former Judy Ellison who is also a graduate of Piedmont.  They are parents of two sons, John and Michael. John serves as a missionary with Baptist Mid-Missions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Michael is the Senior Pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia. They also have three grandchildren, Chloe, Titus and Noelle.
